This scratching and djing thing though
surpassed what any pet rock could possibly have and became a culture
that included break dancers, MCs, DJs and rappers. It was a way to
bring together communities. These DJs found inspiration and motivation
through their turntables and many felt it was a positive way to affect
others. One thing about this film though, did scream
“psychiatric evaluation”!!! A couple of the famous
DJs talk about aliens and feeling like some divine thing brought them
to DJ which I found a little confusing and even a little scary. Overall
though, the film was interesting. Aside from the aliens (which I am
still wondering about). It did showcase a lot of battles and jam
sessions between different DJ groups. I have to admit though; the film
was a little bit too long for my attention span. I know that if I was a
DJ, I might think differently, but towards the last 15mins or so, I got
bored with the film. I was tired of seeing battle after battle and
wanted more history and less of the other stuff. I survived it though
and liked the film after which I now think of DJing as more of an art.
By definition, art is the conscious production or arrangement of
sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements that affects the
sense of beauty. In this case, that beauty is music. It can also be
defined as a skill that is attained by study, practice and observation.
Take these elements; add creativity, motivation and dedication and you
have yourself a DJ. Still don't believe me? Watch the movie, it might
just convice you.
